Using Scented Candles and Shaped Candles to Create a Theme in the Powder Room

January 2nd, 2008 by Jeannine C

I visited a friend’s house for New Year’s Eve, and I loved what she had done in her powder room.  The room had a seashore Seashell And Seahorse Nine Piece Floating Candle Set From CandleBaytheme, and next to the sea shells and sand dollars, she worked in lots of shaped candles and a few richly scented candles.

The vanity had a filled seashell candle next to the bottle of liquid soap; it was so pretty I did a double-take to make sure it actually was a candle.  The effect was a delicate emphasis of the room’s theme which didn’t take up much space on the small vanity.

There was a small shelving unit in the corner with an Ocean Scented jar candle burning on the top shelf.  It gave the whole room an intriguing fresh breeze scent that kept things smelling fresh even though the bathroom was being used extensively by all the party guests. The light from the single flame was enough to enable guests to find the light switch, so our hostess didn’t have to leave the vanity light turned on.  I noticed that she also had an Island Flowers scented candle on another shelf, so she switched fragrances whenever she wanted something different.

Finally, on top of the commode, a collection of starfish candles floated in a clear glass bowl.   Candle Bay offers a selection of starfish candles, which gave her the same variety of sizes and hues found at the beach.

Combining all the candles with the embroidered towels, decorated soap dispenser, and hurricane vase filled with sea shells created a beautifully accessorized room completely in tune with her theme.  The greatest thing about including candles in the room was the addition of scent through the jar candle, as well as color and texture from the shaped candles, all for just a few dollars each.  Whether you’re decorating your home for the first time, or just want to refresh a room’s décor, remember candles are one of the least expensive and most effective ways to add color, fragrance and texture to any room.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for a Special Co-Worker

December 31st, 2007 by Jeannine C

Just as much as Valentine’s Day is a time to tell the love of your life how you feel about them, it’s a time to let other special people know how they make your day brighter.  I’m talking about friends, co-workers, even distant relatives who White And Red Rose Shaped Floating Candles From Illuminations remember your birthday each year.  There’s something extra special about being remembered on Valentine’s Day – a day focused on treasuring relationships and friendships. And when you’re looking for a simple, inexpensive idea to let someone know they’re special, candles make a wonderful choice.

I’ve given co-workers scented candles with excellent results.  Even though you can’t burn a candle in an office, taking the top off a richly scented jar candle fills a cubicle with delicious fragrance without spreading the aroma throughout the office.  If your recipient has allergies, go with a cute shaped candle instead – perhaps a pretty flower such as a rose or gardenia, or something cute like a starfish or candle filled sea shells.

If you both have stressful jobs, an aromatherapy candle containing essential oils that create a peaceful mood, like gourmet vanilla, green tea & ginger or thai lemongrass (all available as long-lasting Therape candles from Candle Bay).

For one of my favorite co-workers, everything in her life was focused on her kids, so I tried to keep that in mind when I picked something out for her.  I went with a set of four candles that looked and smelled like different flavors of cupcakes.  She loved it, especially since her kids loved it, and I always got a smile from her each morning when I got to the office.

Who are the special people you work with each day?  Take a few minutes now to remember them at Valentine’s Day, and you’ll ensure getting a smile each morning for the rest of the year.

By the way, all of these Valentine’s Day candle gifts can be found in our Valentine’s Day Candle Shop.

Fireplaces and Candlelight

December 29th, 2007 by Jeannine C

Tonight is a very cold night in Colorado.  One of those nights where the car windows frost over in minutes, and when our  Fireplaces And Candlelight And Wine Siberian Huskies don’t want to come inside.  It’s a night when even an extra blanket isn’t enough to keep you warm while you watch TV.  A perfect night for relaxing and snuggling close with someone you love.  Our answer is to turn off the lights, light a bunch of candles, and sit in front of a warm fire sipping hot chocolate and munching on thick chocolate chip cookies.

There’s something so peaceful about spending an evening this way.  Between the large flames in the fireplace and the tiny flames of the candles, the room is filled with a golden glow, warm and cozy.

Want to share this same evening with someone special?  You don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day to do it.  Just bring home some hot chocolate and cookies and an assortment of pillars and votives in different sizes and colors.  Put a few candles on each table in the room, maybe a few on the mantle, then start the fire.  Make sure you have plenty of wood handy, so you don’t have to run outside into the frigid night for more logs.   Then relax and enjoy.

Really Big Sale on Christmas Candles at Illuminations!

December 26th, 2007 by Jeannine C

By far, of all the candle stores we work with, Illuminations has the best after-holiday sale, so if you are one of those folks who shops now for next year, now is the time to pick up some great Christmas candles at bargain prices!

Lots of items are 50% off, and some are even 75% off, like Holiday Votive Trees, Ornament Advent Calendars, and a really pretty gold antique bowl just right for floating candles any time of the year! The sale will continue until they sell out of each item; Illuminations doesn’t tell how many of each are in stock, so buy your favorite new candle or candle holder right now, or you may not get what you want. We’ve got all the products we know are still in stock in our Christmas Candle Shop, and will keep that up to date as much as possible.

I just loved those color-changing star shaped floating candles, so I ordered some more as soon as they went on sale. These candles contain tiny LED lights which are activated by the light of the flame, producing a colorful glow within the candle. The glow revolves through a rainbow of colors, like red, blue, purple, green and yellow. Kids just love watching them! This technology is also available in Christmas candles shaped as snowmen and Christmas Trees.

Illuminations has a bunch of cool deals on Christmas scented candles going on too. For example, if you buy a Candy Cane Scented Candle (already on sale!), and you can get an additional discount if you buy a 2nd one. You’ll also find discounts of an extra 15% on items already marked down from 50-75%. Their great deal of free shipping on orders over $75 is available too.

Time to Start Thinking About Valentine’s Day!

December 23rd, 2007 by Jeannine C

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, you have two choices – wait until the last minute, then buy whatever flowers, candy or cards that are still available OR make this year really special by shopping in advance and making every minute of the day truly perfect.  Floating Gardenia Flower Shaped Candle From 100Candles When your special someone realizes all the work you did to make Valentine’s Day extraordinary, you’ll be treasured as much as your gifts.  Of course I’ll make suggestions using Valentine’s Day candles to make the day special.

Today, let’s start with breakfast.  Most people add a single red rose to the breakfast tray to add color and fragrance to the meal.  This year, instead of a live flower, try a beautiful shaped candle instead!  There are several choices which convey your love, and the candle will certainly outlast any live flower.

I love the idea of a tiny floating candle next to the French toast.  A beautiful gardenia shaped candle, offering that delicate scent, is wonderful floating in just about any type of bowl.  Even if you use just a regular cereal bowl, add a drop of green food color to the water to offer contrast to the soft white petals of the floating candle.

If you want something a little more traditional, Discount Candle Shop has wonderful heart shaped floating candles in a rich Valentine’s Day rose color.  Buy two candles to symbolize both of your hearts, and float them in either a clear or white bowl for a simple, yet classic addition to start this special day.

Reed Diffusers – The Subtle Way to Add Fragrance To Your Room

December 21st, 2007 by Jeannine C

If you love the fragrance of richly scented candles, but don’t want to have a flame burning in your home because of children  or pets, consider using reed diffusers.  Reed diffusers involve a tiny bottle containing a few ounces of scented oil into which a few sticks Gardenia Scented Reed Diffusers From CandleBayof bamboo are placed.  The oil travels up through the bamboo sticks and diffuses into the room.  The entire effect is very delicate and the amount of fragrance can be controlled based on the number of sticks included in the display.  A 2 ounce reed diffuser can last up to six weeks.

CandleBay has a lovely collection of oils for reed diffusers with fragrances such as gourmet vanilla, thai lemongrass, raspberry patchouli, fresh fig, and peach mimosa.  My favorite is white chocolate and pear jenever, which mixes a sweet aroma with a sharper one.

One thing which is very important about reed diffuser oils is the type of oil you use.  Candle Bay oils are made in the US and are 100% alcohol free, rather than alcohol based.  Bottles of oil come in three sizes – 2 ounce, 4 ounce (which last 3 months), and 8 ounce (which last 6 months).  Talk about an affordable price – 2 ounces costs less than $3, while an 8 ounce bottle costs $9.  The reeds come in 11” lengths, but can be cut to any length you wish simply with a pair of scissors.  A pack of 50 costs less than $5.  Order a selection of scents today and choose your favorite!

December 16th, 2007 by Jeannine C

Now that Christmas is so close, if you enjoy saving money by buying Christmas candles this year to use next year – it’s time! Color Changing Snowmen And Christmas Tree Candles From

The first one  to start a sale is always Illuminations.  They’ve got such a great selection of richly scented Christmas candles that are unique for this year, like candy cane and eggnog.  My favorites are their candles shaped like snowmen which contain LED lights.  Once you start burning the candle, the heat triggers the LED lights, which provides a cool, color-changing glow inside.  The kids just love watching these candles, which make them an excellent way to keep the little ones occupied at the dinner table.

Some of their decorative items, such as the votive village candle holders are also on sale, and more items will appear each day.  Watch for the discounts to continue to increase too.  Even with this great sale, Illuminations continues to offer free shipping on purchases over $75.

So if you’re a big bargain hunter like me, now’s the time to shop!
